Our Standards
We work to a number of guiding principles stemming from the policy framework laid down in the All Wales Strategy, the White Paper “Building for the Future” and most recently “Fulfilling the Promises” and the Review of Health and Social Care in Wales:

  • People with learning difficulties have a right to normal patterns of life within the community.
  • People with learning difficulties should have the right to be treated as individuals.
  • People with a learning difficulty have the right to the additional support they need if they are to develop to their maximum potential.
  • Support should be provided in a safe environment that preserves dignity.
  • We should encourage and support those who can do so to build their independence.
  • We should promote the continued development of a high quality workforce.

A lot of how we work is governed by national and local legislation, namely:

  • NHS and Community Care Act 1990, Care Standards Act 2000, Registration of the Workforce, Welsh Assembly Guidance, Health and Safety At work Regulations,
  • Local Authority Accreditation and Supporting People requirements.

Much of what we do is determined by the local authority through the role of the Care Manager in setting individual care plans for the people we support. As a result of governmental guidance, a process for Unified Assessments is being developed by all Local Authorities. This will allow us a greater role in the planning of an individuals care package.

At the point where the plan is implemented Mirus is able, within relevant local authority parameters, to set and work to its own standards. Our planning and monitoring systems are based on the values and principles referred to above and we ensure that staff are trained and supported in the process. The system is organised under 7 key standards, which are:

Community Presence
Everyone should be within ordinary communities and using facilities available in the same locality

Competence
Everyone should be given the opportunity to learn and grow and experience increasing capability.

Choice
Everyone should be offered choices and supported and informed in making both major life and day-to-day decisions.

Individuality
Recognition of the uniqueness of each person, ensuring that opportunities exist for individual self-expression.

Status & Respect
Individual should be encouraged to present themselves in a way that promote their own self-esteem.

Continuity
Each individual should experience a natural progression in his or her life. When a change occurs in one area of life, care must be taken to minimise disruption in others.

Relationships/Partners
Everyone should be part of a community with a network of friends and family. Some of these relationships will have deeper attachments.

Assessing the current situation of an individual in relation to the above offers a way of prioritising goal planning and monitoring development against a set of core standards.
